What Is Snug Octopus?
Snug Octopus is a 2-rate smart tariff for properties with storage heaters, automatically charging your heaters at the cheapest and greenest times of the day. There are no exit fees or tie-ins, so you're free to change tariff (or supplier) without penalty whenever you like.
How Does Snug Octopus Work?
Storage heaters take in heat at night (when electricity is cheapest) and release it during the day to warm your home. Octopus connect to your heaters and schedule them to store energy overnight, plus a 1-hour boost every afternoon in the winter. You decide how long you want your heaters to charge for overnight and whenever that's happening, you'll be charged the off-peak rate for your entire property.
What Are The Snug Octopus Tariff Rates?
The mega cheap period is charged at 9p/kWh and is from 00:30-06:30 plus one extra hour every winter afternoon. Outwith these hours you'll pay the day rate, which depends on your location, but is around 26p/kWh. You can check current prices on the Octopus website by submitting your post code.
Are My Storage Heaters Suitable For Snug Octopus?
Any brand of storage heater will work with Snug Octopus, as long as your heating is managed by an auxiliary load control switch (ALCS). Octopus will check if your storage heaters can connect to their smart charging system, but some things make it more likely. Your storage heaters are more likely to be suitable if they come on and off automatically without you setting a timer, if you have a SMETS2 second-generation smart meter or if your electricity meter has more than 4 wires coming out of the bottom of it. Modern storage heaters which have Wi-Fi or an app may not be compatible, as some aren't controlled by the smart meter itself, but it's definitely worth checking.
Do I Need A Smart Meter To Join Snug Octopus?
Yes. Octopus Energy need half-hourly electricity readings from you in order to bill correctly. This means you need a SMETS2 smart meter. If you don't have a second-generation smart meter, Octopus can install one free of charge.
