How Does The Octopus Tracker Tariff Work?

Every day Octopus Energy updates the price of your energy based upon an independently published wholesale market price. You can see what you’re paying for energy, distribution, environmental and social obligations, plus exactly how much Octopus earn from you.

Octopus use the latest price and your usage estimates to provide an energy forecast for the next 12 months. You can also see a comparison of your daily energy spend versus the average variable tariff.

How Are Prices Of The Octopus Tracker Tariff Calculated?

Prices for the Octopus Tracker are based on a unit rate and a standing charge, both of which vary depending on your location. The unit rate is calculated by a formula and is updated at midnight every night based on the latest wholesale price and is shown in your online account. You can check the current daily rate for your area before signing up (to see how it compares to your current prices) by inputting your post code (don't click "get a quote") on the Octopus tariff page. The standing charge is a fixed daily amount which changes infrequently. Octopus give you a minimum of 30 days notice of any change to the standing charge.         

Aren't Energy Prices Really Volatile?

Octopus Tracker prices reflect wholesale market price drops just as fast as market price increases. Trackers are usually cheaper in the long run compared to hedged and insured prices. Octopus operate a maximum cap on Tracker prices.  

How Does The Monthly Payment Work For The Octopus Tracker Tariff?

As with most other tariffs, Octopus Energy estimate the cost of your annual energy usage and divide it by 12 to set your monthly direct debit amount. Octopus regularly review this figure so your payments can be adjusted up or down if your consumption or energy prices are different from the estimate. This helps avoid excess credit or debit balances.

Will I Be Stuck Paying Higher Prices On the Octopus Tracker Tariff If Wholesale Prices Go Up?

No. Just get in touch with Octopus and you can switch onto another tariff the next day, free of charge. Octopus don't charge exit fees so you can also switch to another supplier at any time without penalty.

Do I Need A Smart Meter For Octopus Tracker?

No. If you don't have a smart meter, Octopus use the readings you submit to calculate your daily usage in tandem with third party industry data. If you do have a smart meter Octopus will use the readings received automatically.

What If I've Got A Traditional Economy 7 Meter?

Unfortunately this isn't compatible with Octopus Tracker, but you can switch gas only to the tracker.
