The trial has been taking place in UKPN's operating area, where leased Nissan LEAFs have been paired with Quasar V2G chargers to permit electric vehicle drivers to export power from their cars to the grid. If drivers use this bi-directional charging technology a sufficient number of times per month they can make money back from it. Throughout the trial real world data has been gathered to illustrate the potential of using vehicle-to-grid technology to convert an EV's battery into a mobile energy asset. The Powerloop App integrates with the Nissan LEAF and the Wallbox Quasar charger, allowing customers to simply tell Octopus when they need their car charged and by how much. The app and the system behind it also control the discharge of the car battery according to the needs of the grid. Powerloop comes with a 12-month fixed rate 100% renewable electricity energy tariff from Octopus Energy, with rates depending on location.
The Powerloop trial has now reached capacity and is closed to new customers, but to find out more about Powerloop, please visit the Octopus Electric Vehicles website.
