What Can I Do With My Octopoints?
You can convert Octopoints into credit on your Octopus account at any time and can multiply your points and redeem exclusive rewards with Octopus Energy partners (like National Trust and National Trust for Scotland) or buy Octopus merchandise through Shoptopus, their online store. Octopus reckon most customers could gain nearly £200 of rewards per year by just taking part.
What Are Octoplus Saving Sessions?
Octoplus Saving Sessions are enabled by National Grid ESO's Demand Flexibility Service, which pays households for moving their energy usage out of peak times. They run from around November to March every year as part of the Octoplus Rewards Programme. Over the course of the first winter, £5.3 million in savings was passed onto 700,000 Octopus Energy customers.
How Long Does A Saving Session Last?
A Saving Session usually lasts 1-4 hours during which customers can earn rewards (OctoPoints) for using less electricity than usual. Reducing energy consumption at certain times of the day can have a bigger impact on the planet, the energy system and your wallet. With Saving Sessions you're paid to use less power.
Why Are Octopus Running Saving Sessions?
Presently when there's not enough renewable energy to satisfy demand, the UK has to fire up extra dirty coal and gas stations. Rather than pay these very expensive fossil fuel generators to turn on when demand is high, Saving Sessions reward people for not using energy during these peak periods. Shifting energy usage not only cuts carbon emissions but helps balance the national grid, and customers also save on their bills by actively participating in making energy smarter, cheaper and greener.
Who Pays For Octoplus Saving Sessions?
The project is funded by National Grid. It’s much cheaper for them to pay consumers to use a bit less energy than for them to pay expensive fossil fuel generators to switch on at short notice.
How Much Are The Saving Session Rewards?
Rewards are earned for every kWh of electricity you don't use compared to your normal usage. If you took part in 12 sessions last winter and saved an average of 1 kWh of electricity per session, your OctoPoint rewards would have been approximately £36. However there could be around 25 sessions in total, so you could earn around £100.
