Do I Need A Smart Meter For The Octopus Smart Export Guarantee Tariff?

Yes you do. You'll need a 'Secure' branded first-generation 'SMETS1' smart meter or second-generation 'SMETS2' smart meter, which Octopus can take half-hourly readings from. If you're an Octopus customer and don't have a smart meter, you can contact them to register your interest. Smart meters are installed at no cost.

What Else Would I Need?

In addition to a smart meter, you'll need an MCS certificate to confirm the quality of your solar panels. If you'd like to export electricity from a source other than solar PV, you should get in touch with Octopus first of all. You'll also need an email or letter from your DNO (Distribution Network Operator) confirming they've agreed to your microgeneration installation. Lastly, when you sign up you'll also be asked to confirm that you're not receiving FIT payments. Octopus will also check the FIT register.
