What Is The Octopus Go Tariff?
Octopus Go is a time-of-use beta smart tariff, whereby customers pay only 8.5p/kWh for their electricity between 12:30am and 5:30am. The Octopus Go Tariff is on average over 50% cheaper than typical Economy 7 night-time rates. Octopus Go fuel costs for electric vehicle owners are close to 2p per mile, which is around a tenth of the price of driving a traditional car! If you've got an immersion heater you can heat your water at these off-peak rates, charge your storage heaters cheaply and basically charge anything with a battery for 8.5p/kWh.
Do I Need A Smart Meter For The Octopus Go Tariff?
Yes. You'll need a SMETS2 smart meter or a “Secure” branded SMETS1 meter, which Octopus can receive half-hourly readings from. If you don't have a smart meter you can register your interest with Octopus. The smart meter installation is free of charge.
What Are The Prices Of The Octopus Go Tariff?
As mentioned above, Octopus Go charges only 8.5p/kWh for off-peak electricity for 5 hours starting at 12:30am, irrespective of your location. Outwith those hours the peak rate is 22p/kWh-25p/kWh depending on where you live. The amount of the daily standing charge also depends where your property is.
Is The Octopus Go Tariff Fixed Or Variable?
Octopus Go was previously a fixed tariff with prices set for 1 year, but Go is now a flexible, variable tariff. As for all Octopus tariffs, there are no tie-ins or exit fees, so you can change tariffs or switch supplier at any time without penalty.
Is There An Octopus Go Gas Tariff?
No. Wholesale gas prices don't really change throughout the day, so there would be no way to offer a really low off-peak rate. If you're switching dual fuels, you can choose one of Octopus Energy's standard gas tariffs.
What Is The Octopus Go Faster Tariff?
Octopus Go Faster offered a similar tariff to Octopus Go but over different 4 and 5-hour periods, starting from as early as 8:30pm. Octopus Go Faster is however not currently available.
What Is The Octopus Go Green Tariff?
Octopus Go Green is exclusively for Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, Skoda or Cupra EV drivers. All Octopus tariffs are green but with Go Green, Octopus buy electricity directly from renewable generators through power purchase agreements, as opposed to purchasing REGOs (Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin certificates). Octopus Go Green rates are the same as the regular Octopus Go tariff.
How Do I Sign Up To The Octopus Go Tariff?
You have to be a current Octopus customer (with a smart meter) to switch to Octopus Go. If you're not already an Octopus customer you have to sign up to a non-smart interim tariff to begin with. Remember to first click on my referral link below if you're a new customer and would like to earn £75 from your switch. Then navigate to the Octopus Go page and sign up from there. You'll be given a choice of interim tariffs to start off with (such as Flexible Octopus) and then moved automatically to Octopus Go shortly after your switch completes.
EV drivers may also be interested in the vehicle leasing options provided by Octopus Electric Vehicles, Octopus Powerloop V2G and the Octopus Electroverse Network.
If you use my Octopus Energy referral link to join Octopus we both get £50 free account credit when your switch completes. I split my referral reward with you, so you also receive an extra £25 from me via PayPal, bank transfer or Amazon gift card. That's a total switching bonus of £75. After using my personal referral link just get in touch through my contact form and let me know how you'd like your extra £25 paid!
