What Is An Octopus Referral Code?

The first thing to say it's that it's actually a referral link more than a referral code. Although you can give the referral code to Octopus over the phone if you're signing up that way, more commonly new customers click on the referral link to get a quote and start the switching process.    

What Does An Octopus Referral Code Look Like?

The referral code looks something like https://share.octopus.energy/adjective-noun-number and is unique to each individual customer. For example, my own referral code is https://share.octopus.energy/ivory-jade-264. As mentioned above, this a working link that takes you to the Octopus website, so by clicking  https://share.octopus.energy/ivory-jade-264 you can begin your switch to Octopus.

How Do I Know That The Referral Code Has Worked?

When you click on a referral link you'll be transferred to the Octopus website where you'll see an initial message which (when using my referral) says "Special offer: £50 credit for you and Norman if you sign-up now". Be wary of clicking multiple Octopus referral links because usually the Octopus system will only recognise the first link you clicked, which may or may not be the referral you intended to use. Your welcome email will name your referrer and your referrer will receive an email to say you've used their referral code. You are at liberty to change your referrer if you contact Octopus within a reasonable time period.        

What If I Forgot To Use An Octopus Referral Code?

Sometimes, if you didn't click on a referral link to initiate you switch, Octopus will actually ask if you forgot to use a referral code and give you the opportunity to paste and copy a referral link within your online account. You need to paste the full link, beginning https.... If this option isn't available just contact Octopus via any of the normal channels and they're usually happy to add a referral code manually.

When Do I Receive My £50 Account Credit?

Credits are added to customer accounts when the new user is on supply with Octopus and their first month’s direct debit has been successfully taken.

What If I'm A Prepay Customer?

If you've got a traditional prepay meter, sign up using a referral link then get in touch with Octopus when your account is set up and your referral credit can either be processed via direct debit as a refund or sent out as a key or card with £50 credit preloaded. If you've got a smart prepay meter, the £50 referral reward can be added as credit to your meter.

Can I Use An Octopus Referral Code For A Business Switch?

Can I Use A Comparison Site To Switch And Still Get A Referral Reward?

No. For it to be commercially viable for Octopus you have to sign up on their website via a customer referral link. Octopus are in partnership with a number of switching sites, independent sales companies and charities, but have to pay these third parties for every customer who joins through them. This additional cost would mean that Octopus would actually lose money on every new customer if they offered the referral reward as well.  

Any Other Things I Need To Know About Octopus Referral Codes?

When sharing your own Octopus referral code, don't spam your link on third party websites like TrustPilot or Octopus's social media pages. Paying to advertise your referral link, like with Google Ads, is not permitted, as this increases Octopus's own advertising costs.
